CWS Window Installation: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide

We install and service CWS window units throughout Long Beach, and most CWS window installation jobs run between $450 and $1,150 per opening depending on the series, glass package, and how much of the original frame is still sound. We stock CWS-compatible hardware and balance parts on the truck, so a failed component usually gets replaced the same visit. What brings most homeowners to us is a window that won’t stay up, a lock that won’t catch, or a frame corner that has started letting the marine air in.

The CWS product line shows up across Long Beach in a few repeating ways. We see them most often in the bluff-adjacent neighborhoods like Belmont Shore and Naples, where salt air and afternoon sun work on seals and hardware, and in the mid-century tracts of Los Altos and the Wrigley district, where original CWS frames from the 1980s and early 1990s are hitting their third decade of service. That third-decade stretch is when balance springs, pivot bars, and weatherstripping start failing in sequence.

If you have a CWS window that is dragging, falling closed, or whistling at the sill, you want a technician who can identify the exact CWS series from the etching or the balance assembly instead of guessing from a photo.

Which CWS Models This Applies To

CWS operates on a series-based system rather than model names, and the series number is almost always etched in the lower corner of the glass or stamped on the spacer bar between the panes. The difference matters a lot for parts fit. A CWS 3000 series single-hung does not share a balance assembly with the CWS 6000 series, even when both are the same glass width. I’ve seen homeowners buy what they thought was the matching balance on a supply website and then dig out the old one only to find the shoe is off by an eighth of an inch.

We make the OEM-versus-aftermarket call case by case. CWS factory hardware tends to run more expensive and slower to source, but for certain series it is the only part that seats correctly in the jamb. For other series, a quality aftermarket balance or pivot bar from a U.S. manufacturer outperforms the original and costs less. Our rule: if the aftermarket part equals or beats the original tolerance, we use it and tell you why. If your CWS unit needs the factory part, we source it and show the difference on the written quote.

One compatibility gotcha worth knowing in Long Beach specifically: CWS frames installed in the 1980s along the coast often came with uncoated aluminum or non-stainless screws at the shoe and pivot. After thirty years of fog and salt air, those fasteners seize. We see them snap on removal. We plan for that before we quote, not after, because replacing a seized pivot costs different money than a clean swap.

We also keep parts on hand for the brands we regularly service alongside CWS: PGT, CGI, and ES Windows. If your home has a mixed install, which happens more often than you’d think after years of piecemeal replacements, one visit can address all of it.

Signs Your CWS Window Installation Is Failing

  • The sash drops or slams when you let go. This means the balance assembly has lost tension or the shoe has slipped out of the track. On CWS single-hungs, this is usually the balance cartridge, and it tends to go on the window that faces the strongest afternoon sun.
  • The lock never quite lines up. Over years, the sash settles and the keep bar drifts. You’ll feel the lock scrape instead of seat. Forcing it only bends the keep bar further, and a bent keep bar won’t hold the corner seal tight against drafts.
  • You feel air at the meeting rail. The pile weatherstripping along the bottom sash rail flattens with age and salt exposure. In Long Beach homes near the water, we see this about two years earlier than inland, because the salt fines work into the fibers and stiffen them.
  • Condensation between the panes. The CWS insulated glass unit has lost its seal. That means the desiccant inside the spacer is saturated, and the argon or krypton fill has leaked out. The glass still functions, but the thermal value is gone.
  • The sash is hard to lift or tilts crooked in the track. Either the pivot bars at the bottom corners have worn their cam slots, or the frame itself has racked slightly from settlement. Long Beach has a lot of older construction on clay-heavy soil, and frames do shift over decades.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Long Beach, a CWS balance replacement with labor typically runs $150 to $285 per window. A full sash rebuild with new balances, pivot bars, weatherstripping, and lock realignment lands between $350 and $550 per opening. Replacing a failed insulated glass unit runs $275 to $650 depending on size, coating, and gas fill. If the frame itself is too far gone and the window needs full replacement with a new CWS unit, that is $850 to $1,500 installed per opening.

Every quote we write in Long Beach includes the part, the labor, the disposal of the old hardware or glass, and the cleanup. There is no separate line for tape or a surprise charge for a seized screw. If you approve a number, that is the number on the invoice. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something about the install or the part is not right within a year, we make it right without a debate.

The price driver is almost always the series and glass package. A CWS 3000 series balance is common and affordable. A CWS 6000 or 8000 series with a tinted Low-E insulated unit and custom sizing is a different equation. We show you both the OEM and aftermarket pricing when both options are legitimate, so you decide with the numbers in front of you.

DIY or Call Us?

Balance assemblies on a CWS single-hung hold tension. If the balance cartridge is still intact but the shoe slipped from the track, a homeowner can sometimes reseat it carefully with the window tilted in. But if the balance itself has lost tension or the metal shoe is cracked, removing the cartridge without the right technique can send the spring end into the frame or into your hand. We treat a broken balance the same way we treat a garage door spring: respect the stored energy, wear gloves, and know the release sequence before touching it.

What you can safely check yourself: your CWS series etching, the glass measurements, and whether the frame corners show white oxidation at the fasteners. That helps us quote over the phone more accurately. Beyond that, let a technician carry the risk. Keith Yamada has been working older frames in Long Beach long enough to know which CWS balances put up a fight, and the crew never rushes a sash that has been seated for twenty years. Call (562) 912-3327 and we’ll walk through what you are seeing.
